Biography/History

Alonzo Carroll Burton was born in Lawrence County, Indiana on July 15, 1867. He served as Superintendent of the Mayfield City Schools prior to joining the faculty of the Western Kentucky State Normal School in 1912. He was head of the Rural Education Department until his death on October 14, 1933.

Scope and Content

The collection includes a series of articles written by Burton on rural education in Kentucky; a guide for elementary rural education co-authored with Horace McMurtry; Burton's report on "moonlight schools" to teach literacy; a compilation of some of his writings and sayings; and a book of tributes assembled upon his death.
