Biography/History

Asher Leon Young (1919-1991) was born in Richardsville, Kentucky, the son of Asher and Gladys Howard Lynch Young. He graduated from Richardsville High School and later matriculated at Western Kentucky University where he received his degree in Agriculture. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After teaching school for several years at Vanceburg and Chandler's Chapel, Kentucky, he became a federal loan representative for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He married Dorcas Bell Young (1916-1988) and had three children: Robert L. Young, Nannette Senter, and Alice Young Campbell. He married Lucille Grimes in 1990.

Always interested in local history and genealogy, Young spent his retirement years collecting information about families in the Richardsville area of Warren County. He was a member of several historical and genealogical societies. He was interred at Fairview Cemetery.

Scope and Content

Almost two-thirds of this collection is genealogical in nature. It contains information on a number of Warren County families, with particular emphasis on the Phipps, Simpson, White and Young families. A number of photographs concerning grave sites and tombstones are included, as well as a manuscript about epitaphs, "It's Written in Stone." The ledger of an unnamed Warren County blacksmith (1912-1934) is also included. The collection was a gift of Mr. Young's estate in 1992 as stipulated by his will. It was delivered by his daughter, Mrs. Nannette Senter. In addition to the manuscript collection, the Young materials include fourteen scrapbooks that are housed in the Kentucky Library (an index to the scrapbooks is available). The scrapbooks are chiefly photographs, but they also include obituaries, invitations and clippings related to families in Wayne County and Warren County.
