Stuart, a native of Greenup County, Kentucky, attended Lincoln Memorial University (A.B., 1929), Vanderbilt University (1931 - 1932), and Peabody College. He taught in Greenup County and, after gaining fame as an author and poet, lectured at various colleges and universities. Stuart was the recipient of a Guggenheim in 1937 and the Academy of Arts and Sciences award in 1941, and was named poet laureate of Kentucky in 1954. He was the author of over fifty works of prose and poetry, nearly all of which treat the theme of rural life in eastern Kentucky.

Scope and Content

Materials consist of correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and photographs of Jesse Stuart which were collected by Berea College library staff.

Letters (ca. 80 items) reflect Stuart's personal or literary relationships with his correspondents. Correspondents include John Wilson Townsend, book dealer and author; Loyal Jones, Director of Berea College's Appalachian Center; Perley F. Ayer, Executive Director of the Council of the Southern Mountains; and George Mathew Adams. Clippings, typed copies of Stuart's published works, and magazines with Stuart stories accompany the collection, along with several autographed photographs of Stuart.

Also present are copies of correspondence (ca. 30 items) between Stuart and Lawrence S. Thompson, former director of the University of Kentucky Libraries, which predominantly concerns literary matters. These are accompanied by a collection of articles and reviews, which Thompson compiled, that relate to Stuart's work.
