Bale - Boone, Joy, Recipient of the citizen Algernon Sydney Sullivan Medallion in 1969, First woman elected to the Elizabethtown City Council, 1950, and founded the Elizabethtown League of Women's Voters, established and edited the first Kentucky journal of poetry, "Approaches," received an honorary doctorate in humanities from Western Kentucky University and received the "Friend of Education" award in 1999, co-founded, with Professor Mary Ellen Miller, the Center for Robert Penn Warren Studies at WKU, and was Kentucky Poet Laureate, 1997 - 1999, Public Relations Department, 1969
