_ 1. ` MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS Murray State University I · May 12, 1997 l . The Board of Regents of Murray State University met on Monday, { May 12, 1997, in quarterly session in the Board of Regents Room, Wells ‘ Hall, on the campus of Murray State University. The meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. by Chair Sid Easley. Regent Marilyn Buchanon gave the invocation. Upon roll call, the following were present: Marilyn Buchanon, Thomas Burich, Sid Easley, Beverly Ford, Nancey France, Arlivia Gamble, Marie Jones, Philip Lanier, Wells Lovett, and Derek Somerville. A moment of silence was observed in honor of Regent Richard Lewis who passed away on March 10, 1997. A copy of his eulogy was distributed ‘ to each member. The following Resolution was written by Regent Wells Lovett. MURRAY STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF REGENTS » RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION Richard Hayes Lewis, B.S., J.D. RICHARD H. LEWIS began his service as Regent of Murray State . University on July 1, 1995, by appointment of Governor Brereton Jones. _ The appointment was hailed by the news media and every constituency of the University as an outstanding one. All expected he would serve long beyond the initial term of six years. n ONE YEAR LATER, he was stricken with a terminal illness, diagnosed only a few days after participating in a regular meeting of the Board of Regents. He continued unabated his duties as Regent until, after a valiant struggle to regain his health, Richard succumbed March 11, 1997. A scholarship was established in his name, and his family requested expressions of sympathy be by contributions to the fund. RICHARD LEWIS was a loyal son of Murray State University. He received the Bachelor of Science degree in 1960. In 1996, Murray State University recognized his love for, and his work on its behalf, by presenting to him its prestigious Golden Horseshoe award. Indeed, Richard "...cherished its traditions, and held its banner high." RICHARD LEWIS possessed in full measure every quality to earn the respect, affection and admiration of fellow human beings. He had a brilliant mind, a totally even temperament, and seemingly unending energy. We will miss him sorely. NOW, THEREFORE, ON THIS MAY 12, 1997, BE IT RESOLVED by the Murray State University Board of Regents, that this recognition of the service of RICHARD H. LEWIS as Regent be preserved in the minutes as a token of our admiration and esteem. ·k** Mr. Lovett moved the adoption of the Resolution and that the Eulogy be included as a part of the permanent record of the minutes. Mrs. Jones seconded and the motion carried. (See Attachment #1) The Board expressed appreciation to Martha Lewis, Richard’s wife, for the contribution of Mr. Lewis’ law books to the Murray State University Library.
