Governor Lawrence Wetherby served in office from 1950-1955 as a Democratic Party affiliate. Originally from Jefferson County, KY, Wetherby continued to reside in that county. His occupations included a Lawyer and Judge. Lawrence Wetherby succeeded to office upon Clements' resignation, then was elected to a full term. Governor Wetherby supported and desegregated public schools, began the Bookmobile program, encouraged tourism, built hospitals, and created the Department of Mental Health. His administration also passed a "sin tax" to raise revenues.
