Visit 11:30am12:30pm Thu at Kerr Bros.Main St. CLARK Gretchen Wolf Laudenberg, 87, Ft. Thomas, KY, formerly of Lexington and widow of William Kenneth Clark, died Mon, Aug 20, 2012. Born in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late John Theodore and Lucille Hall Laudenberg. Devoted to her family, Gretchen was an avid reader and was a member of Highland United Methodist Church, in Ft. Thomas. She is survived by her children, Dr. Paul Alan (Catherine Truda) Clark, Lexington and Joyce (Rick) Whitt, Ft. Thomas, KY; brother, Adolph Laudenberg, Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren, David Clark, Rachel Clark, Shelby Whitt and Haley Whitt; great grandchild, Zoe Netherton; and daughter-in-law, Margaret Katie Clark, Frankfort, KY. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Asa Laudenberg and Sarah Earline Sandlin. Services will be 11:30 am Fri at MilwardSouthland. CLIFTON Annice M, died on August 16, 2012 in Washington, DC. She was born in Macon, IL in 1923, the daughter of Paul and Lucy (Earnshaw) Dunn. Mrs. Clifton graduated from St. John’s School of Nursing Education in Springfield, IL in 1945. That year she also married Frank J. Clifton of Decatur, IL. The Clifton’s moved to Lexington, KY in 1961. She worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph’s and Central Baptist hospitals in Lexington. The Cliftons were members of Christ the King parish. Frank Clifton died in 1993 and a few years later Annice moved to the Washington, DC area to be with her son’s family. She is survived by her son, Eric; his wife, Julia; and her grandchildren, Paul and Olivia, all of Washington, DC, and her brother, Peter Dunn of Decatur, IL. Funeral service will be 10am Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church. Kerr Brothers Funeral Home-Main St. is in charge of arrangements. CRAVENS Gladys Louise Gross, wife of the late Raymond Coleman Cravens, died Mon, Aug 20, 2012 at the Hospice Care Center. Born April 10, 1916 in Hazard, KY, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Armelda Riley Gross. Mrs. Cravens was a retired waitress for the Phoenix Hotel and a member of Christ Church Episcopal. Survivors include two daughters, Ramona Cravens of Lexington and Juanita Cravens, Florida. Funeral services will be 12:30pm Thu at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. by Rev. Joe Mitchell. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be 10am Thu until the time of the service. OWEN Betty, 77, of Fearrington Village in Pittsboro and formerly of Cary, died unexpectedly on Friday, August 17, 2012 while on vacation at the coast of North Carolina with her family. Born January 26, 1935 in Hazard, KY, Mrs. Owen was the daughter of David Yancey Combs and Ollie Mosley Combs. Mrs. Owen was Salutatorian of Hazard (Kentucky) High School in 1953. She attended Centre College, Danville, KY 1953-54 and the University of Kentucky 1954-57, earning a BA in English and Education and graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She received her Masters in Public Health Education from the University of North Carolina At Chapel Hill in 1962. She was a member of both the UK and UNC alumni associations. Early in her career, she taught English in the public schools of California, Kentucky and North Carolina. She moved to North Carolina in 1966, with her husband Larry, to whom she was married for 50 years. They resided in both Charlotte and Cary before moving to Fearrington Village near Pittsboro in 2004. From 1977 - 85, she served as Senior Policy Advisor to Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. She was directly responsible for policy matters involving education and human resources. She often represented the Governor at the General Assembly and provided outreach to local, state and federal agencies and non-profit organizations. She was born May 8, 1936 to the late William and Susie Bell. Dolores taught in the Indiana School system for 34 1/2 years. She was a faithful member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church of East Chicago while living in the state of Indiana. For the past year and a half she served as a member of First African Baptist Church. She leaves to cherish her memory, sons Harrison, Mark (Antonio) and Hiram (Jennifer) Page; five grandchildren, Tiffany, Matthew, Justin, Jasmine and Jaylynn; sisters, Daisy Dale, Yvonne (Paul) Edmonds, Joanne (John) Smith; brother, Ben Bell; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In 1987, she was appointed as Executive Director of the Emerging Issues Forum at North Carolina State University. Working with Governor Hunt and university leaders, she planned and produced events which joined North Carolina citizens with local, state and national government and business leaders to debate policies on jobs, trade, the economy, education and many other topics. Mrs. Owen held this position until 2001. Other career highlights included serving as Chief of Staff for the National Task Force on Education and consulting to the Carnegie Forum on Education and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She served on the boards of directors for the NC Foundation for Advanced Health Programs, the NC Progress Board and The Methodist Home for Children. She had been a District Director of the NC Retired Government Employees Association and volunteered with Friends of the Pittsboro Library and Habitat for Humanity. On January 23, 1994, she was selected as “Tar Heel of the Week” by the News and Observer. Mrs. Owen was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cary, NC, the Daughters of the American Revolution and a lifelong Democrat. Mrs. Owen is survived by her husband, Larry G. Owen, of Pittsboro; sons, Geoffrey Lawrence Owen and Robert David Owen; daughters-inlaw, Lauren Owen and Allison Owen; and grandchildren, Olivia Owen, Matthew Owen, Elijah Owen and Wyatt Owen, all residing in Cary.
