This two item collection consists of one letter written by William Tanner to the Hon. C. Johnson and one to Philip Swigert, respectively. The first letter, dated Frankfort, Aug. 31, 1847, was a letter of introduction for Alexander M. Blanton. He was a surgeon from Frankfort, Kentucky, looking for an appointment in Washington City. The second letter, dated Jan. 21, 1847, concerns telegraph poles. Tanner requested that the city put up ports, "at the bridge, extending up St. Clair Street to Broadway, thence up Broadway to the limits of the town, up Lexington Hill, running with the turnpike." "Ports" is the original term for telegrapah poles.
